Connection to the Land: Voices of Acoma Pueblo

When there are no politicians, bureaucrats, or federal agents around to influence talking points, what do the Indigenous elders of Acoma Pueblo really want to tell the world?

Connection to the Land is the first episode of the Native Voices Film Series produced by the Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) in conjunction with the University of New Mexico-Taos Film and Digital Media Arts (FDMA) program.

A serendipitous meeting at the 2022 New Mexico Outdoor Economics Conference between FDMA student and Taos Pueblo member Cruz Concha and the CDTC’s New Mexico Regional Representative, Cornell “Corey” Torivio of Acoma Pueblo, led to the making of this film.

In March 2023, the UNM-Taos FDMA program director, Peter Walker, led ten advanced students to film at Acoma Pueblo. This was a meaningful introduction to adventure filmmaking in a cross-cultural setting for future media makers.

Filming was completed in April 2023 and screened at Acoma Pueblo in November 2023.

In January, it was submitted to Mountainfilm 2024.
